What is Crown Treatment?

A dental crown, also called a "veneer", is a tooth-shaped cap used to completely surround or save a damaged tooth. It is the ideal and easiest way to repair broken or weakened teeth. A dental crown is also required for the following reasons:

· To prevent a weak tooth from breaking,

· To restore an already broken tooth,

· To cover and support a tooth with a large filling,

· To hold a dental bridge in place,

· To cover a dental implant,

· Making a cosmetic modification

Dental crowns can be porcelain molten metal (PFM), all-metal, all-resin, or all-ceramic. Patients can choose from these materials depending on their preferences or budget.

In which cases are crowns applied?

Crowns can be applied when the person wants to change the form and color of the teeth for reasons such as dental aesthetics. In addition, porcelain crowns can be applied to protect the teeth of people with a high loss of substance in their teeth and if there is less tooth tissue due to root canal treatment. Apart from this, if the porcelain veneers that were made before need to be replaced, porcelain crowns can be applied in this case.

Dental porcelain; It is used for both porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers to create a beautiful and natural tooth appearance shape. Porcelain visually resembles natural teeth. However, although they are similar to natural teeth, one technique may be more appropriate than the other, considering the needs and wishes of the person.

Before the Procedure

Usually two visits to the dentist are required. The first involves examining and preparing the tooth. There may be X-Rays from different angels to check the roots of the tooth that took the crown and surrounding bone. Sometimes the tooth may require root canal treatment first. The second includes the placement of the crown.

What happens during a Dental Crown?

Local anesthesia will be applied to the tooth and gingival tissue around the tooth. The dentist will prepare (shape) the tooth, take the impression, and place a temporary crown. The prepared tooth model will be sent to the dental laboratory. On the second visit, the dentist secures the finished crown in place.

How long does it take to place a Dental Crown?

The dental crown procedure takes up to 2 hours in two visits. There will be 2 to 3 days between appointments.

How long does the crown last?

A dental crown lasts 5 to 7 years or more, depending on how well you take care of it.

Will the Crown be same as my real tooth?

The shape of the dental crown is slightly different from your original tooth before it was crowned. You may feel the difference at first, but you may not notice it after a few days. If you do not feel comfortable, some adjustments can be made by your dentist.

How to care crowns?

It is very important to pay attention to the cleanliness of crowns for their longevity. Especially the edges of the teeth that support the dentures, the gingiva should be cleaned well during tooth brushing. Teeth should be brushed twice a day and cleaned using dental floss once. These measures to be taken will ensure the cleaning of plaques that cause bacteria formation. The important thing here is to clean the plaque between the teeth and gums. In order to prevent breakage and damage to porcelain crowns, hard substances should be avoided in feeding and should not be chewed. By visiting the dentist routinely, he should be careful to be under constant control.
